Tips for keeping your first aid skills sharp

Emergencies are always unpredictable and you can never know when your first aid skills might be needed. First aid competence is a vital life skill – knowing what to do and having the confidence to do it can make all the difference in a rescue situation.

Congratulations on getting your FRC first aid qualification!

The FRC first aid course that you have completed has given you a solid knowledge base and the ability to act competently in a variety of situations where timely, life-saving first aid is critical.

First aid is a life skill that can make you invaluable in an emergency.

The knowledge and skills that you have learned on your first aid course can also be used proactively to make life safer for you and your loved ones. You now know how to identify hazards and dangers in your environment, which can help you to avoid and prevent accidents.

You will also have learned about risks associated with various illnesses, and that knowledge can guide you to change your habits and lifestyle to lower your risk of sudden illness.

How to retain first aid skills

  • Take another FRC first aid course – or complete a course in our online learning environment at a time and place that suits you.
  • Update your first aid qualification by taking a refresher course every three years. Find the nearest provider here.
  • Refresh your memory of the most common first aid protocols here.
  • Identify hazards in your home and at work and prepare yourself mentally for dealing with an injury. See here for more information.
  • Keep your first aid supplies up to date and practise using them so that you know what to do in a real emergency.
  • Download the 112 Suomi app to your phone. You can use the app to make an emergency call, check the location of your nearest defibrillator, look up instructions for dealing with various kinds of emergencies and get warning messages from the authorities straight to your phone.

Talk to your loved ones about what each member of the family should do if a situation arises at home that requires first aid or a call to emergency services. It is also a good idea to proactively identify risks and hazards in your environment and to prepare mentally for dealing with an injury.

Make sure that everyone knows where first aid supplies are kept in the house or in the car and how to use them.
